The origin of a Church is vital for determining if it is from God. While God uses unholy men and unholy deeds in the Providence with which He governs His people, nonetheless, we know from the Old and New Testaments, and the history of the Early Church, of the reform movements like those of Trent and the 11th century, and the foundations of the great religious orders and monastic rules, that those genuinely sent by God to carry out His positive Will are holy themselves, and use holy means to accomplish that Will, at least in matters of greater importance. It is not a decisive argument--God is not incapable of using a sinner and his sins to accomplish a great work that He wills through Divine permission--but in matters of great import, of foundation and reform, it is the holy who are selected, and they carry out their work in a holy way. With that in mind, I present, as told by Fr. Adrian Fortescue in his book , The Orthodox Eastern Church, the disedifying story of the two schisms which broke the Church between East and West, that all may know the character and means of the Western and Eastern leaders, and decide which cause was the cause of God from its champions.
